Container Workshop & Drying Room
Creating a Custom Container Workshop: A Dual-Purpose Solution for Forest Research
The Customer
Forest Research, the leading authority in Great Britain on forestry and arboreal studies, is internationally recognised for its commitment to supporting sustainable forestry through scientific research and evidence. They reached out with a specific set of requirements for a 20ft container to aid their team in the field.
The unit needed to be outfitted with shelving for tool storage, essential power points, lighting, and a heater to maintain a conducive work environment. Additionally, they requested the incorporation of a workbench to facilitate daily tasks and a drying cupboard, an essential feature for their fieldwork equipment maintenance.
The Build
The fabrication stage set the foundation for Forest Research’s custom 20 ft container. A robust steel frame was constructed to form a partition, delineating the workspace from what would become the drying room. To ensure security and durability, an anti-vandal personnel door and a reinforced window were installed, accompanied by metal plates for future fixtures and fittings, including mounts for extractor fans.
Both areas were thermally insulated to create a comfortable, energy-efficient space. The main workshop area was finished with a practical ply lining, while the drying room featured a clean, bright Wilkins White lining, conducive to its purpose.
The workshop was equipped with a bespoke two-tiered workbench and a secure three-tiered racking system, anchored firmly in place. The electrical installation was comprehensive: wall-mounted heaters warmed both rooms, an extractor fan was fitted to manage airflow and humidity, and ample lighting and power sockets were positioned for convenience and functionality.
Completing the interior, the floor was covered with a durable, black non-slip vinyl, ensuring safety and ease of maintenance in a busy environment.
The Outcome
The customised container was delivered to a Forest Research site, providing a dedicated external space that accommodates both work and equipment maintenance. The finished product stands as a spacious workshop, engineered to remain warm during the winter months and cool in the summertime, optimising comfort for year-round use. The additional partitioned area serves as an efficient drying room, ideal for wet gear and clothing.
This project exemplifies the versatility of container conversions, showcasing how a single structure can embody dual functionality. It reinforces the notion that containers are an excellent choice for workshop setups, not only because of their inherent customisability but also due to their robustness and ease of transport.
Forest Research now benefits from a facility that encapsulates the practicality and innovation of modern workspace solutions, tailored to their specific field requirements. The container workshop and drying room combination demonstrates the potential to repurpose these steel structures into multifaceted, sustainable work environments for various industries.
